In various teachings, the subtle energy centres between our physical and ethereal bodies are referred to as chakras. The seven main chakras are located along the spine or in the vertical central axis of the body. They are connected by the sushumna-nadi, a central energy channel.
The 5 elements in the tradition of Anahata Yoga are the same as those used in Ayurveda (Ayus =life and Veda=knowledge). The five elements are associated with the lower five of our chakras and are also found in our five fingers.
Mudras are hand gestures that go far beyond the familiar greeting gestures (for example, the Anjali Mudra for Namaste). This perhaps best-known mudra is also used, for example, to connect ourselves with our heart. Mud means joy, but also gesture.Ra means "that which gives". So a mudra is "that which brings joy".
Since each finger is assigned to an element and these are also assigned to the chakras, the stimulation of the nerve endings when practicing the different mudras triggers subtle reactions in the body. Thus, mudras also serve as a small medicine chest for on the go.
